Skateboarding, Chaplaincy, and the Power of Presence: Street League Moments

Over the last couple of months, something powerful has been taking shape behind the scenes at Street League Skateboarding (SLS). In the middle of all the energy, intensity, and world-class skateboarding, chaplaincy has quietly found its place—and it’s making a real impact.

I’ve had the incredible opportunity to travel to several SLS stops, not just as a skater, but as a chaplain. My mission has been simple: to be present. To meet the best skateboarders in the world right where they are—amidst the pressure, the grind, and the spotlight—and to offer something deeper. Not hype. Not performance tips. But something eternal: care, hope, accountability, and the message of Jesus.

Miami: A Quiet Breakthrough

The stop in Miami was especially meaningful. With a longer event window, there were more practice sessions and more natural chances to connect. I had the privilege of walking alongside Felipe Gustavo, who ended up landing on the podium with a third-place finish. But beyond the contest, Miami became a place of real ministry. I got to hand out Bibles, pray with skaters, and have meaningful conversations. In the intimacy of that arena stop, chaplaincy had room to breathe and take root.

Santa Monica: A Wild Ride

Santa Monica was a totally different beast. Thousands of people packed onto the historic pier, and SLS built a replica stair set that turned the boardwalk into a full-blown showcase. It was loud, fast, and electric. But even in all that chaos, God made space. I was able to share Bibles and prayers—even with skaters just moments before they stepped onto the podium. It was wild. And yet, sacred.

Why Chaplaincy Matters

Behind the scenes, the pressure these athletes face is unreal—sponsors, stats, expectations, image—it’s a lot. These aren’t just contests; they’re proving grounds, performances, career-defining moments. So for me to be there, not as a fan or brand rep, but as a steady, trusted presence—that matters. I’m there to offer care without condition. To remind them their worth isn’t in points or podiums, but in purpose. That they’re seen, known, and deeply loved by God. For many, this might be the beginning of something eternal.

Looking Ahead: Virginia Beach

This weekend I’m heading to Virginia Beach for the Jackalope Festival. It’s another big opportunity—and this time, I’ll be co-hosting a chapel gathering with my friend Beaver Flemming. Together, we’ll rally the skate community to pause, reflect, and hear the Word of God. It’s a moment to reset, be filled, and be reminded of truth.

Please be praying. That God would continue to move. That lives would be touched. That amidst all the tricks, trophies, and tour stops, eternity would break through.

If you would like to give to support chaplaincy costs like flights, hotels, etc, please make a donation to partner with me in making rider into disciples!
