The Key to Natural Spiritual Growth

Growth happens naturally in the right

environment. Grass grows, flowers bloom, and fruits blossom and ripen. Sunlight, healthy soil, clean air, and water all work together to help a seed become a strong, healthy plant. It’s natural development or increase. My wife and I have been working on a garden together this spring. We built planter boxes, planted seeds in little pots inside our house and now that it’s finally warming up we get to transplant our herbs and veggies outside!

Watching the plants grow each day has been fun! People like to experience growth too. Humans always want more, so we do things to stimulate growth and get the results we want. We go to the gym to get in shape. We work long hours to increase our wealth. We read the Bible more and go to church every Sunday. We attend classes and conferences, watch videos, read books and blogs, and seek out advice from others.

None of those things are bad in and of themselves. Yet somehow the things we do to stimulate growth often become unnatural, forced and even detrimental to our health. In Luke 12:27 Jesus points this out, “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these” (NASB). Consider how much he loves you. Do you trust that Christ will provide for you? Are you trying to stimulate growth to much? Do you believe it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose? Are you able to find rest in Christ? The best environment for natural spiritual growth is in the presence of Jesus.
