On July 24th and 25th, we had twenty eager riders sign up for JSAW's Skate Camp Pro. This skate camp is specifically designed to help riders take their skills to the next level. Each rider receives one on one coaching to help them to overcome the barriers that block them from progressing. But the real benefit, is hands on learning from a pro. When combined this creates an environment of progression and encouragement to push riders to learn new tricks and skills. The riders love the chance to shine, grow in skill, and spend genuine time with a pro. This past week was no exception. We had "Street League
Skateboarding" Pro and skate legend Felipe Gustavo out here to work hands on
with our riders.

At the start of camp, we had quite a few riders who wanted to learn/land tricks way outside their skill level. This became apparent when we tried to coach them through those tricks and everyone was getting so overworked, upset and injured; "straining at the oars" so to speak. All they wanted to do was skip the basics to get to the hard stuff. But Felipe emphasized that the basics are the foundation for the hard stuff. He shared two amazing "tips" that help every rider
who wants to become the next top rider. These two are, being consistent and not skipping over the basics. Every trick builds off another. He has practiced feeling out each and every trick and knows exactly how his board will respond as a result of popping a particular trick. This was one of the great things about having him here. He taught our riders that its so worth it making sure your ollies are dialed before moving on to kickflips, grinds or anything else.
Felipe has competed in hundreds of contests, skated all over the world, and been in continuous training. He showed us that he is as good as he is because he has the basics nailed down. After sharing this wisdom, our riders went from straining at the oars to becoming more confident, and actually feeling accomplished and landing all new tricks.
Without JSAW's Skate Program, these riders most likely would have struggled to learn these lessons. Instead, though, JSAW was able to offer an incredible, once in a lifetime experience for each of these riders. and that's because of all of JSAW's generous donors. We are so thankful for all of you. It's through your support that JSAW continues to find new and exciting ways to improve and grow the program.
